Summer Newsletter - June 2006

AGM

The Annual General Meeting was held in Kilmardinny House on 18th April. Thank you to those of you who took the time to attend.

Perhaps the topic of most significance to all our residents, irrespective of age or whether or not you have children, was that of the recently implemented changes to our refuse collections.

Officers from the Cleansing Department were invited to speak at the meeting to explain the changes in council policy. They made the important point that landfill costs are very expensive. The hope is, that with a fortnightly collection as opposed to the previous weekly collection, residents might be encouraged to recycle more efficiently. Ultimately, as current residents of the planet, we really are responsible for the condition of the environment which future generations will inherit. Anything we can do now to improve that legacy is surely worthwhile.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

The annual subscription has again been held at £4. A member of the committee will call on each household between the middle and end of August to collect subscriptions and to issue you with your new membership card. Please remember that the current white card will be invalid after 30th September.

Remember that two of our local restaurants offer discounts to residents. The West Highland Gate allows a discount of 25% off all à la carte meals in the restaurant, at certain times only. If you are seated before 7.30pm from Monday to Thursday, and before 6.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, you can take advantage of this generous discount on production of a Resident’s membership card. Please note that discounts are not available on Sunday, also that each card permits discount for up to 4 diners only.

The Burnbrae Restaurant offers diners 10% off all meals. This concession is available at the bar from Monday right through to Sunday at anytime of day.

Purple Edge Graphics, the stationers at Bearsden Cross, offers a discount of 10% on most items. Ask instore for further details

EQUIPMENT FOR LOAN

As part of your annual subscription, you are able to borrow gardening and DIY equipment. Our treasurer, Jim Robertson looks after this side of things, and he can be contacted on 942 8448.

The equipment is maintained annually, and is insured by the Association.

Unfortunately, our 30ft ladder was removed earlier in the year from the back garden of a resident who had borrowed it from the Association. We will be replacing it with a shorter ladder, subject to checking on new guidelines relating to Health and Safety Issues regarding acceptable working height regulations.

SOCIAL CALENDAR

We will be holding a ceilidh in November in Milngavie Bowling Club, with the proceeds from the raffle going to charity. The exact date and cost have yet to be confirmed ... we’ll give you details in the Autumn Newsletter.

Our annual senior citizens’ Christmas outing to the King’s Theatre is set to take place again on the first Monday in December. The pantomime this year is “Aladdin”. Since we began this venture several years ago, we have managed to hold the price at £10 per head. This year, as a result of increase in ticket prices and coach hire, the cost will be £15 per head. However, we feel sure you will agree that even at that price it is still excellent value. The entire package includes coach travel to and from the theatre, a traditional fish tea at Harry Ramsden’s and a tour of the Christmas lights. We will give you more details in the autumn Newsletter.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

At this time of year, assuming the weather improves, most of you will be doing some work in your garden. Try to ensure that garages and sheds are kept locked, as a deterrent to opportunist thieves. It is also worth remembering to lock your house door when you are out in the garden .... remember that an opportunist thief is exactly that.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Again, as a matter of security, it is also worth letting your immediate neighbours know when you are going to be away from home.

Please also remember that during the school holidays
we all need to be even more aware of young children playing outside. We simply ask that residents observe the “Twenty’s Plenty” signs, as well as being particularly observant of parked vehicles which can cause blind spots.

The committee would like to take this opportunity to welcome any new residents to our area - we hope you enjoy your stay here.

Thanks
We would also like to thank the staff at Purple Edge Graphics for all the work they do for us, from printing the newsletters to making up our membership cards - it is very much appreciated.

Enjoy the summer break!
