Summer 2007 Edition

Our Recent AGM

The 64th Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday 4th April 207 in Kilmardinny House and was attended by approximately 30 residents.

A new committee was formed with the present incumbents accepting office bearer roles for a further year. They are as follows: -

Flora Frame, President

Victor Budas, Vice President

Jim Robertson, Treasurer

Margaret Robertson, Secretary.

Flora Frame’s review of the year encompassed the successful setting up of the Kilmardinny PALS (Kilmardinny Playpark and Loch Scheme) from a sub-committee formed by the residents’ association in the previous year. PALS had  achieved charitable status and was now operating independently of the Residents’ Association

The Association also successfully organised a Senior Citizens’ outing to the pantomime in December, which was much enjoyed by all the participants.

Thanks were recorded to retiring committee members, Martin Malloy and Marion Wilson. Thanks were also accorded to Jim Chalmers who assisted the committee with the collection of subscriptions.

Mike Newall, Manager of East Dunbartonshire Roads’ Department, gave a presentation on the services provided by the Roads’ Department. The difficulties the area has with indiscriminate parking, speeding on Mosshead Road, and the problems with parking on the raised area at the junction of Burnbrae Avenue and Mosshead Road were discussed. It was agreed that Mike Newall would be invited to attend a future committee meeting to discuss what solutions would best deal with these issues.

The Association’s next challenge will be maintaining a watching brief on the proposed large development known as the ‘Kilmardinny Strip’ , the area       fronting Milngavie Road from West of Scotland ground along to Reid Avenue. The Residents’ Association has written to the Planning Department stating that whilst we welcome the rail halt and the realignment of the road with improved traffic management at the bottom of Mosshead Road, we wished to record our concerns at the level of housing density proposed i.e. some 550 houses. A detailed planning application has not yet been submitted to council and we watch and wait.

On the basis that the Residents’ Association may require to have set aside a  ‘fighting fund’ to employ professional advice on the detailed planning application for this development a proposal to raise the annual subscriptions to £5 per household was proposed from the floor of the meeting and the proposal was accepted and seconded by the membership.

Subscriptions will be collected during August/September 2007

Review of the Residents’ Association Activities

The Burnbrae Residents’ Association covers Mosshead Road, Rowan Drive, Oak Avenue, Hazel Avenue, Beech Ave, Hawthorn Avenue, Burnbrae Avenue, Kilmardinny Crescent and Carseview Drive.

As properties are constantly changing hands and new families move in, new residents in the area have asked what is the purpose of the Residents’ Association and why should we support it?

Over its 64 years in existence the Association has fought major planning applications which would affect the area.  Some we have successfully defeated, others we have lost i.e. the phone mast and more recently the quest to have conditions added to the new Bearsden Academy development.

We have held social functions to encourage neighbourliness, set up the neighbourhood watch scheme, held representation on the local community council and other residents’ associations, maintained a watching brief on new developments and held regular liaison meetings with the local councillor.

The Residents’ subscription card entitles members to 10% off meals at the Burnbrae at any time and 10% off stationery and photocopying facilities at Purple Edge, Bearsden Cross. We regret to advise however that the new manager of West Highland Gate has discontinued the discount terms to our members.

Several years ago Burnbrae Residents’ Association paid East Dunbartonshire Council to purchase and plant the trees along Mosshead Road - are there other landscaping tasks we should consider for our area?

The Association also have items of gardening and home improvement equipment, for loan to members at no charge. All equipment is annually serviced. Are there any other items of equipment for loan that you would like to see the Association purchase?

Our aims and Objectives are:

·        To protect and preserve the interests of its members in all matters affecting them as residents in the district and to secure joint action by the members in these connections and to raise any necessary funds for the purpose.

·        To co-operate with any other body or Association having similar objects.

To arrange such function, social or otherwise, as may be desirable in the interests of its members.

As a member of the Residents’ Association, what would you like to see the Association involved in? Which activities would you support? Please answer our questionnaire!

Please tick and/or comment and return to the nearest committee member when they collect your subscription, or telephone us with your views!

The Association has its own website but would appreciate the services of a web master to make it more interesting and to keep it up to date! Should we use some of our funds to pay for professional web services or is there an interested resident with the necessary skills and a willingness to help us?
