Winter 2009 Edition

Lower Kilmardinny / Westpark Planning Appeal Update

The deadline for EDC and CALA/Stewart Milne to reach agreement on land transfer under Section 75 has now passed. We have continued to lobby the council NOT to agree to sell land to the developers and NOT to accept any proposal which includes closure of the Allander Sports Centre prior to construction and opening of a new sports centre. We will keep you updated on proceedings.

West of Scotland Rugby Ground Planning Update

We were disappointed that outline planning permission was granted for the West of Scotland rugby club move to Auchenhowie. This is in direct contradiction of the Local Plan for the area which calls for retention of WoS at the Burnbrae site.

One interesting point, however, was that no building on the Burnbrae site will be permitted until new facilities for WoS have been constructed. You will note that this is something we are concerned about for the Allander Sports Centre, but no such restriction has yet been placed on that!

Councillor Mackay is putting forward a motion that, if passed by EDC, would ensure that the Allander DOES remain open until such time as a new facility has been constructed.  We will keep you informed of the outcome of this, although I think it’ll be in the local paper pretty soon!

Kilmardinny PALS

We know a lot of you have been disappointed at the lack of progress with the playpark at the top of Mosshead Road. The delays have been caused by a variety of reasons: poor weather, holidays, and construction errors. Local councillor Amanda Stewart has been pushing for progress on this, and we are led to believe you should start to see the effect of that soon.

Residents’ Association Xmas Lunch, December 7th

We are holding a Residents’ Association Xmas lunch in the Burnbrae Hotel on Monday 7th December.
For only £10 (residents) or £12:50 (non-resident friends) you can have either the festive 2-course meal (starter/main or main/dessert) and tea or coffee, or the non-festive 3 course meal.

The festive menu is:
    Soup
    Turkey & all the trimmings
        or
    Butternut squash & sage risotto
    Xmas pudding
        or
    Ice cream

We need to know by November 20th how many people are going, so to ensure your place please send your contact details and a cheque for the full amount, payable to Burnbrae Residents’ Association, to our Treasurer, Jim Robertson, 6 Rowan Drive, Bearsden, Glasgow, G61 3HQ.

And still on a Christmas theme....

Who doesn’t love Xmas carols?

If you want to listen to some festive cheer, there will be a carol concerts given by the Kelvin choir  at the following times and locations

Kelvingrove Art Gallery on Sunday 13th December from 3 -4 pm

St Andrew’s Church, Roman Rd on Tuesday 15th December at 7:30 pm (ticket price not yet determined but usually around £4)

Prince’s Square on Sunday 20th December from 2 - 4 pm

If you want to see your president make a fool of herself, that will be your chance!

There will also be a carol concert given locally by the Bearsden Choir (see local paper for details nearer the time).

And yet more about Christmas..

Another couple of dates for your diary.

The Charities Choices Xmas events are being held on Saturday 7th November in Milngavie Town Hall and on Wednesday 11th November in Glasgow City Chambers. Both events are open from 10 am until around 3 pm.

Come along and get your charity Xmas cards and a wide variety of stocking-filler gifts.

Again, if you want to see your President make an even bigger fool of herself, I’ll be there manning (womanning? personning?) a charity stall.

And at last something NOT about Xmas!

We are holding a Cabaret Night on 27th February 2010 in Milngavie Bowling Club. There will be a singer and a comedian providing the entertainment, nibbles will be provided, and of course the bar prices are nice and low!

The event starts at 8:30 and we will advertise it again nearer the time. Tickets will be £10 each – where else can you get a whole evening’s entertainment for a tenner!

The Help For Heroes event in August was well attended and raised around £3000 for a very worthwhile charity.

Due to the adverse flying conditions the Parachute Regiment couldn’t “drop” in as intended, but the Blues & Greys allowed everyone to scramble around on their Challenger 2 main battle tank and Scimitar armoured recce vehicle, with 5 Scots providing paintballing. Not to be outdone the Royal Marines were on hand too.

If you missed the event or are interested in finding out more about Help For Heroes then please go to http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/.

Lastly…

As is this the last scheduled news letter for 2009, the Residents’ Association would like to thank everyone for their continued support and interest through the year. Subject to planning events we may be sending an update to all members in due course.

The committee wish you a very happy festive holiday and best wishes for the coming year.
