New Year 2009 Edition

A Burns’ Supper’s a Burns’ Supper

for a’ that!

The new plan indicates a 2-storey rather than the previously planned 3-storey house, although the overall height of the development is only reduced by 5’, which isn’t really a storey height even for someone as short as me! It appears that the plan requires the removal of several mature trees which are currently protected and replacement screening using evergreen Laurel hedging along Kilmardinny Avenue would be provided.

This area is part of EDCs Historic Gardens and Designated Landscapes survey of November 2006, but this document has not yet been registered by EDC with Historic Scotland. Once registered, the site would be protected from any future development. The document describes the area as being of “high local value for its important features – house, loch, woodlands and parkland – which have great impact in defining the character of the local housing environment and provide many public facilities.”   EXACTLY!!

We are pressing EDC to register this document and shall also be objecting to the plans on the same grounds as previously – loss of woodland amenity and adverse visual and environmental impact. 27 letters of objection have been received by EDC so far.

Residents who want to object to this development should do so by writing to the planning department at EDC or via the council website. It was our objections (55 of them) which led to the last application being unsuccessful.

We are holding a Burns’ Supper on Saturday 14th February in Milngavie Bowling Club. Tickets cost £12.50 each and cover a 5-course meal and entertainment. This is the cheaper alternative to over-priced Valentine’s Day outings, so contact Ian McGregor on 942 3318 to buy your tickets now!

If we don’t manage to sell enough tickets by the end of January we will, regretfully, have to cancel this event.

Raffle prizes wanted

We are also looking for donations for raffle prizes for the Burns’ Night, so if you have anything suitable please contact Jim Robertson on 942 8448.

White Lodge Planning Application

A modified planning application for the grounds of  White Lodge i.e. the wooded garden area bordering Kilmardinny Cresc/Ave. has now been submitted, although it has not yet been validated as not all neighbours have been notified.

Kilmardinny Strip Planning Enquiry

Kilmardinny PALS

The Public Enquiry is now finished and we await the outcome.  Thanks are due to all of the K-WAG team, and especially to Keith Small who led our representation at the enquiry so well - no small job as there was an incredible amount of paperwork involved on all sides. The final council submission was 65 pages long while the one from CALA was 85 pages! It may take up to 6 months for the results of the Enquiry to be made public, so we’ll keep you all informed.

A message from our friendly boys in blue.

The last edition told you about a car left with its engine running to defrost the windscreen while the owner went back indoors, and which was then stolen. We have been told by the local Police that £300,000 worth of cars have now been stolen in this way, and NONE of them have been covered by the owners’ insurance policies. So…please think carefully before you leave your car unattended.

There have also been a couple of actual or attempted housebreakings in the Thomson Drive and Kilmardinny areas.

And the spectre of vandalism has raised its head again – graffiti on the fencing at one of the footpaths to Kilmardinny Loch. Police are aware of the issues and intend dealing with the culprits. This should be quite easy as the graffiti included their names….smart, eh?

Council contractors have now completed the initial ground works for the improved play park area and are waiting for the ground to settle. The new play equipment will be installed as soon as possible.

Work will start soon on upgrading the path linking the field at Burnbrae Avenue with the small car park at the Loch and that will complete the upgrading of all the paths around the loch.

Thanks from the formerly homeless cat!

Thanks to Janice & Brian who offered a home to the cat who used to live in Burnbrae Avenue .  Believe it or not, the cat is now happily back in her old house!
